Health & Safety
- No drug or alcohol use. This is to keep you and your fellow staff, faculty, and students safe around equipment, tools, and open flames.
- No weapons allowed on the premises.
- No headphones. You must be aware of your surroundings.
- Wear eye protection as directed.
- Wear ear protection when operating power tools.
- STAY ALERT – Keep your mind on the procedure and always think it through.
- Be considerate of others. Be certain that your work is not endangering someone else. If others are violating safety rules, caution them or talk with a member of our Studio staff.
- You must dress safely and appropriately. See clothing requirements below.
The Crucible is a safe space for participants’ physical and emotional well-being. Students are expected to conduct themselves with respect for individuals, the organization, and the facility at all times. Students will review Studio Rules and Group Agreements of The Crucible during their first class. The Crucible reserves the right to enforce these rules, and anyone in violation will be subject to consequences including, but not limited to immediate dismissal from classes without refund.
Effective March 1st, 2023:
- Visitors to The Crucible, including staff, faculty, volunteers, and students, are not required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to enter the building. While we are no longer checking vaccination documentation, we strongly encourage all participants to be up-to-date with their COVID-19 vaccinations, including receiving a booster dose, if eligible.
- Effective March 1st, 2023: Masks are not required inside The Crucible but are highly encouraged as they greatly reduce the risk of illness among individuals in shared indoor spaces. Please note that certain types of masks may be required for specific classes for inhalation protection or safety precautions.
- These changes are in alignment with guidelines from the California Department of Public Health, Cal/OSHA, Alameda County Department of Health (), and Oakland Unified School District (). We will continue to monitor COVID-19 trends (as well as other pathogens) and adjust our future policies according to risks posed to our community.
Individuals should complete a before coming to The Crucible to assess potential COVID-19 symptoms.
Do not come to The Crucible if you or a member of your household have tested positive for Covid-19 or are experiencing symptoms of illness. Symptoms consistent with Covid-19 include fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.
Students who are ill will not be permitted to attend class. If you have concerns or questions about your class attendance, please contact us by emailing [email protected] and we will be able to help you with any inquiries.

- Students will be provided with additional safety gear based on the safety requirements for the class they are attending.
The Crucible strives to maintain a safe and healthy environment, yet some chemicals, particulates, and processes may not be suitable for students with a medical condition, who are pregnant, or who have a sensitivity to light or other specific triggers. Please disclose any medical conditions to the registrar and discuss your concerns before enrolling in a course.
Registration, Pricing, & Discounts
- Tuition – This is the cost of the educational experience of the class – the time and planning by faculty and staff and your creative experience as a student.
- Studio Fees – Set costs we cannot defray for the use of the Crucible’s studios such as gas, electricity, and tools. We provide all materials for classes, with the exception of a handful as noted in the catalog.
- Registration Fee – Class price includes a non-refundable registration fee to cover our administrative costs.
A student may be eligible for a refund less a non-refundable registration fee. Refunds are based on the type of class and the date of request. All registrations are subject to applicable fees regardless of the payment method or purchaser.
Students wishing to transfer must first withdraw from their registered class, adhering to the Crucible withdrawal policy. Any refund or credit due after withdrawal can be applied to enrollment in a different class.
Refunds for classes regularly priced at $200 or less:
- Withdrawals made 14 or more days before the first class date: Full refund less $50 registration fee
- Withdrawals made 7-13 days before the first class date: Full refund less $50 registration fee plus $25 processing fee
- Withdrawals made 6 or fewer days before the first class date: Ineligible for refund or transfer
Refunds for adult classes regularly priced over $200 and youth classes outside of youth weeklong camps:
- Withdrawals made 14 or more days before the first class date: Full refund less $100 registration fee
- Withdrawals made 7-13 days before the first class date: Full refund less $100 registration fee plus $25 processing fee
- Withdrawals made 6 or fewer days before the first class date: Ineligible for refund or transfer
Refunds for Youth Spring and Summer Weeklong Camps:
- Withdrawals made 30 or more days before the first class date: Full refund less $100 registration fee
- Withdrawals made 7-29 days before the first class date: Full refund less $100 registration fee plus $50 processing fee
- Withdrawals made 6 or fewer days before the first class date: Ineligible for refund or transfer

Discounted membership available to students in continuing education/vocational training schools with proof of ID. Youth students with a financial need are encouraged to inquire about our scholarship opportunities.

Studio Rules
Monday – Friday: 10am–10pm
Saturday – Sunday: 10am–6pm
- Please wear all natural fiber clothing; nylon, polyester, spandex, or other synthetics are not recommended around open flame.
- The studio can be very cold or very hot; wearing layers is recommended.
- Flip-flops, sandals, slip-ons, or open-toed shoes of any kind are not allowed in the studio.
- Please dress in long pants; shorts are not allowed in the studio. Skirts are not recommended.
- Remember to bring prescription or reading glasses – you may need them!
- Students will be provided with additional safety gear based on the safety requirements for the class they are attending.
- Private Studio Perimeter doors are never to be left propped open.
- Never leave a roll-up door open unattended when loading or unloading.
- At night, please check to see if you are the last one to leave the building and turn off all unused overhead lights.
- Studio renters must notify and schedule with studio staff 24 hours in advance if deliveries are coming to The Crucible.
- Studio renters cannot work on side jobs or outside contracts without first filling out a “Studio Use Agreement” form with the Director of Studio Operations. Once the executive director has approved the form, fees have been assessed, and a scheduled determined, the job can begin.
- Storage of materials outside of the renter’s space is not permitted.
CREATE Program Policies

- Never lift more than you can handle. Ask for help and when lifting, always use your arms and legs, while keeping your back completely straightened.

At The Crucible, you must dress safely and appropriately. Arrive for class in all natural fiber clothing, closed-toe shoes, and long pants. Nylon, polyester, spandex, or other synthetics are not allowed around machines, equipment, or processes that can produce hot fragments, sparks, or flames. Layers are encouraged as the the studio can be very cold or very hot. Additional protective gear will be provided as needed.
- (ABC) -This is the multipurpose dry chemical extinguisher. It can be used on any type of fire.
- (BC) -This is the regular type of dry chemical extinguisher. B fires involve flammable or combustible liquids such as gasoline, kerosene, grease and oil, and C fires involve electrical equipment, such as appliances, wiring, circuit breakers, and outlets.
- (A) – This extinguisher is pressurized water. Extinguishers are for ordinary combustible materials such as paper, wood, cardboard, and most plastics.
TO USE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER
- P – Pull safety pin from the handle.
- A – Aim at the base of the fire.
- S – Squeeze the trigger handle.
- S – Sweep from side to side at the base of the fire.
Fire Safety
- The Crucible is inspected annually by the fire department and has an occupancy permit for up to 1,000 people.
- Our studios are fully equipped with fire sprinklers and fire extinguishers, all of which are regularly checked and tested by an independent outside fire prevention company.
- Our fire sprinkler system is connected to a monitoring system that will immediately alert the fire department if the system is activated.
- Any open fire at Crucible events, whether on stage or elsewhere, is closely monitored by specially trained fire safety personnel to guarantee the safety of our guests and the performers.
- In the unlikely event of a fire, The Crucible has multiple exits, all of which are illuminated by emergency exit signs.
- Pathways to the nearest exits are clearly marked with bright yellow arrows painted on the studio floor.
